The Dachshund has a long muscular body. Their ears are long and floppy. They were bred to have long ears to prevent dirt from getting in their ears when they dig into burrows to catch badgers.

In the german language Dachshund means "badger dog". They belong to the Hound Group which accounts for the latter part of their name.

Dachshund are described as lively, playful, bold, willful, stubborn, curious, mischievous, courageous and devoted to their family. They love a good game of fetch indoors and outdoors. They require a lot of attention or they can become bored, destructive and in some instances they have become aggressive. They know no fear and may bite off more than they can chew.

The dachshund is known as a very clever dog but yet difficult to train.  If they have previously urinated in the house it is difficult to break this habit.  Often time due to their body type an accidental urination may go unoticed.  For housebreaking purposes it is recomended that the dachshund be crate trained. Training must be done by someone who is a strong "pack leader". Training must be firm and consistent. Your leadership should always remain clear.

The dachshund has three coat varities. The smooth coat is short and shiny. The wirehaire has a coarse outer coat and a fine coat underneath. The long haired may be mildy wavy and is present on the chest, the underside of the body, on the ears and behind the legs. They should not have hair all over their body.

Health wise dachshunds are prone to spinal problems. Obesity,  running up the stairs frequently stair climbing and jumping may contribute to this problem. The other health problems include diabetes, urinary tract problems. Deafness and blindness are vary rare but do occur.

Dachshunds are still one of the most common dogs in America. They are on the list of most popular dogs on a continuing basis.

Dachshunds came to the United States in early 1900's. They were entered in the AKC in 1885.
