The German Shepherd is described as very intelligent ,easily trained, to bark only when necessary, have strong protective instincts, a very good watch dog, eager to please, great with children and forms strong emotional bonds with it's owner. They can try to be very dominant. The owner of a German Shepherd must be firm but gentle and to secure its leadership position when the dog is a young puppy. They can be destructive if not properly trained , isolated or bored. They may even try to outsmart you. Remember every dog is an individual.
They are known to be instinctive watch dogs , guard dogs and make wonderful pets. German Shepherds will seek the attention they want and need. Without this attention or something to do they can become bored and destructive. They are great with adults and children. Though it is best to not leave the dog alone with children . Despite their wonderful qualities accidents can happen.
They can tolerate apartment living but requires extensive exercise. Walks should be 2- 4 times a day and least one hour each or a fenced yard where they can exercise and burn off their energy.
German Shepherds health problems are inherited and specific to the breed. These problems are hip and elbow dysplasia, arthritis pain, bloat also known as Gastric Dilation Volvulus ,the second leading killer of dogs, flea allergies, Panosteitis (inflammation of long bones), congenital heart problems and Von Willebrands disease (a blood clotting problem ). They should be taken to the vet at least twice a year for check ups and necessary vaccinations.
Frequent bathing is not good for their coat as it strips the protective oils and can cause or aggravate skin problems. They should be brushed daily. Brushing daily can alert you to any health problems and increase the bond between you and your dog.
Attention to their teeth is also important. Their teeth should be brushed twice a week with a toothbrush and toothpaste formulated for dogs. Dog periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss, bad breath and even heart disease.
The life expectancy of a German Shepherd is 12 -13 years with frequent and necessary vet check-ups, good living conditions and the proper diet.
The German Shepherd was first recognized by The American Kennel Association in 1908.
