                                     Saliva

The slimy drool, saliva contains enzymes that help your dog digest food. It also moistens their mouth and  throat so that food entering the esophagus is able to  move down into your stomach.

Drool has a kind of slimy feel to it. I prefer saliva if we have to talk about it at all. My dog salivates. He is a Yellow Labrador Retriever. They are not at the tops of the list of dogs that drool. Some breeds are born to drool (Mastiffs).

Dogs drool because of  their mouth structure,  their hungry and drool at the thought of food and the wonderful  aroma in the air, after drinking a large amount of water and when they are excited.

Some dogs do drool naturally such as the Saint Bernhards,  Bull Mastiffs and  Blood Hounds. Some drool only occasionally such as the Labrador and Dalmatian.

"Sudden"  drooling can be a warning sign of problems. It can signify poisoning,  disease, tooth problems, mouth injuries, mouth infection or  something foreign in its mouth. The most common cause is a gum infection.

Mastiffs are considered one of the biggest , more profuse droolers. Keep a towel handy.

Bulldogs:  Drool occurs due to their scrunched in face, droopy mouths and the large amount of skin  around it make controlling their saliva difficult.
