Advantages of Getting an Adult Dog
Getting a dog is a big responsibility. A lot of people prefer to get a puppy, and handle all the training aspects themselves. The advantage of an adult dog eliminates the amount of time and frustration it takes to house train.
Depending on the breed and age of the adult dog, there can be more benefits than just this. Let's take a look at some of these benefits.
* The most advantageous benefit of getting an older dog is that their personality is already established.
* They require much less attention and time as a puppy.
* You may be able to come to a decision more quickly that they are suitable for your home and lifestyle.
* If you chose to adopt a dog from a shelter, you are ensured that they are spayed or neutered.
* Adult dogs most often will not be as destructive as puppies, because they are more than likely already trained.
* Most adult dogs will accept a new routine more easily than a puppy.
* Adult dogs do not need to be taken out as often as a puppy.
* By choosing an adult dog, you are choosing a ready made companion.
* Adult dogs are easier to train to new situations than puppies are.
* Shelters often have many more adult dogs than puppies ready and waiting for adoption.
* Adult dogs tend to adapt and become more appropriate for sharing living conditions with children.
* Leaving an adult dog alone is easier than leaving a puppy, especially if you work outside of the home.
* Most adult dogs have had some sort of training beforehand, therefore making it easier for them to adapt.
* Adult dogs are veterinarian checked most of the time, and are more apt to be healthy than pups are.
* Adult dogs bond quickly with their new owners, and accept the new family with ease most of the time.
* They are more likely to respond to commands immediately.
Adult dogs are usually the last ones considered by people visiting the shelter. This leaves them with the threat of being put down. By adopting an adult dog from a shelter, you are literally saving a life.
Put yourself in their place for a moment. They have possibly been neglected, abused or removed from their home for some reason. They could appear depressed or lethargic when you visit the shelter. But then again, how would you feel if you spent most of your days in a 4'X6' cage? I highly doubt you would be happy about it, so think how the dog must feel with the lack of space and attention they get while being stuck in a shelter.
Take the time to go and see for yourself how the older dogs react. You may notice when you walk down the row of cages that some dogs become quite excited, pressing their nose or paws again the cage. Others may just sit there in a corner and look at you with sad eyes.
By adopting an adult dog, you are giving him a chance to receive what he really needs. A caring, loving home is all that is required to turn his life around making him happy again. With many breeds, all with different personalities, there is more than likely one at the shelter nearest you who would be a perfect match to your family. By allowing him into your house, you are not only offering them a home, but a second chance at life, in a safe and happy environment.
